Re-colour the rainbow

Looking Back to Move Forward

Scroll to find out how.

Getty Images’ VisualGPS research in 2021 highlighted that in countries where the LGBTQ+ community is better represented in media and advertising, discrimination and prejudice are decreasing.

Help Getty Images, GAY TIMES and SKITTLES® create the world’s largest historical record of the LGBTQ+ community.

Getty Images VisualGPS research highlights that when images of queer people are used in media and advertising, they often rely on outdated stereotypes of LGBTQ+ people.

For example:

  • 30% of images used show gay men as flamboyant,
  • 29% show images of lesbians looking more masculine,
  • 29% of LGBTQ+ images used feature queer people carrying the rainbow flag.

What’s clear, is that the photographs we often see depicting queer people don’t accurately represent the intersections and diverse spectrum of LGBTQ+ identities.

Looking back...

In partnership with SKITTLES® and GAY TIMES, we are calling upon the public to submit their historical photographs of Pride's past, so we can begin to fill the gaps in the archives and shine the spotlight on previously unseen moments of queer history to acknowledge and celebrate those who have come before us in the fight for LGBTQ+ liberation.

Supporting LGTBQ+ photographers’ careers to document the archives of tomorrow.

Getty Images LGBTQ+ Alliance Employee Resource Group in partnership with Gay Times and SKITTLES® and with support from Queer Britain and FujiFilm, launched a competition looking for emerging photographers to capture the LGBTQ+ community and experience. After receiving a significant number of entries from talented photographers, five winners and five runners up have been announced. The winners and runners-up of the bursary represent a diverse range of perspectives, experiences, and styles, showcasing the breadth and depth of LGBTQ+ creativity in the UK.

Together, we can help fill the gaps in the archives of LGBTQ+ past while ensuring that the archives of tomorrow reflect the histories future generations need to see. Together, we can #RecolourTheRainbow, one story at a time.

Find out more about the bursary winners and runners up here.
